Mariam E.
Researcher & Editor | Media, Technology & the Middle East
I'm a Cairo-NYC-based independent researcher and editor with over ten years of experience working at the intersection of media, technology, and the Middle East. My work spans academic research, editorial work, cultural documentation, and archival research. I hold an MA in Near Eastern Studies from NYU and a Fulbright Fellowship, and have worked with scholars and institutions including the Arab Reform Initiative, the University of Michigan, the University of Oxford, and Columbia University. My current research focuses on AI in the MENA region. I enjoy bringing rigorous analytical training to every project I take part in, whether that's a structural edit, an archival deep-dive, a detailed report, or creating a Wikipedia page for a scholar, and I work best on projects that require both intellectual precision and clear, accessible writing, to a wide general readership and academics alike. Finally, I take the integrity of every project I touch seriously. Let's talk! Types of services I can provide: 1. Academic & Archival Research I provide research support for scholars and institutions including the Arab Reform Initiative, the University of Michigan, the University of Oxford, and Columbia University. I have extensive experience working with primary sources and archival material in Egyptian and US national and private archives, translating and editing Arabic-English texts, and developing projects that require deep regional knowledge and theoretical grounding. 2. Writing, Editing & Translation As a former copyeditor and fact-checker at Mada Masr, one of Egypt's leading independent bilingual news outlets, I handle everything from structural and developmental editing to sub-editing, newsletter curation, and headline writing. I have also transcribed and edited bilingual oral history interviews, and produced academic reports and field documentation across a range of institutional contexts. 3. Communications & Digital Content I've worked across platforms to develop social media strategies, newsletters, and website content for academic institutions and NGOs. I'm fluent in Mailchimp and WordPress, and experienced at turning complex subjects into accessible, well-crafted content. If you need someone who can maintain the intellectual integrity of your message while making it land with a broader audience, that's where I work best. 4. Arabic Language & Cultural Mediation I taught Arabic language and culture at Bard College as a Fulbright Fellow, designing tutorials and integrating visual and sonic material to deepen cultural literacy. I translate nuanced content between Arabic and English — from policy documents to creative and journalistic work — with attention to register, context, and meaning. 5. Documentation & Rapporteur Work I have served as lead documenter and rapporteur for international convenings, including a side event to the 66th UN Commission on the Status of Women, feminist technology workshops across the Global South, and digital rights gatherings in the MENA region. I produce documentation that is accurate, accessible, and politically attuned to the organizations I work with.
