I solve difficult hardware and software problems. My background spans software development, embedded systems, electronics, communications, and hardware/software integration. I can help develop a new system, diagnose one that isn't working, repair or modernize an existing design, or take over a project that has stalled. I have a fully equipped analog/digital electronics lab and development workstations, so I can work hands-on with actual hardware—not just review code or schematics. My equipment and experience include oscilloscopes, logic and protocol analyzers, DMMs, soldering and rework, and the tools needed to develop, test, and debug embedded systems and electronics. My software experience ranges from Python, MicroPython, C, and modern web/database technologies to assembler, FORTRAN, and BASIC. I work with ESP32, Raspberry Pi, RFID, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, serial communications, sensors, control systems, SQL databases, and hardware/software interfaces. I have particular depth in serial communication protocols and troubleshooting problems that cross the boundary between hardware and software. I am equally comfortable with modern and legacy technology. If an older system needs to be understood, repaired, interfaced to newer equipment, or replaced without documentation, that is the kind of problem I enjoy. I also make extensive use of modern AI coding agents as development and debugging tools. They allow me to investigate alternatives, develop and test code, analyze unfamiliar systems, and work efficiently while applying my own engineering judgment and decades of hands-on experience.
