Kyle S.
Multi-Disciplinary Chemical Engineer and Educator
Chemical Engineer with an exceptionally broad skill set. I have focused on chemical/biochemical separations for my PhD, including solid-liquid and vapor phase product recovery. I have analyzed biofouling parameters on membranes using characterization techniques common to both materials science and microbiology applications. This means, for example, I have related disparate data types (e.g. electron micrographs, optical density, zeta potential, contact angles and cellular strain mutations) to tell a single story about biofouling as a function of substrate properties. I have extensive surface characterization experience with a range of polymers and inorganic crystalline materials. I also have cultured facultative (oxygen tolerant) microorganisms and obligate anaerobes (oxygen intolerant) in bioreactors for biofuel production. I have also worked with ultrafast lasers to machine microfluidic devices, which required a custom LabVIEW program I developed. I have extensive expertise with 3D printers using FDM techniques, including rebuilding my own printers to custom specs for improved performance. I build high-performance personal computers for custom applications including 3d modelling and rendering. I am self-motivated and goal-oriented, always maintaining a relation between the current task and the big picture. I am flexible and trainable, meaning I can learn anything and quickly master any new skill.
