Chemical & Polymer Engineer, Material Selection | Environmental Expert
A product does not become commercially useful just because a formulation works once in a lab. It has to use the right materials, meet performance targets, survive testing, remain stable, process correctly, scale without surprises, and make sense from a cost, manufacturing, regulatory, and environmental standpoint. That is the full picture I work on. My background combines polymer engineering, chemical process engineering, and environmental science, with 10+ years across product development, formulation, reverse engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing, and applied R&D. On Upwork: $80K+ earned, 69 jobs, and 1,639 hours. For startups, SMEs, manufacturers, and product developers, that may mean material selection, formulation or reformulation, reverse engineering, failure investigation, laboratory testing, small trial batches, performance improvement, raw-material sourcing, scale-up, and commercialization. Reverse engineering is a major part of that work. I combine product behavior, chemistry, physical properties, SDS/TDS information, patents, technical literature, manufacturing routes, and analytical data rather than relying on a single test. I have access to a research laboratory and major characterization equipment for sample preparation, experimental design, formulation trials, small lab-scale production, comparative testing, and data interpretation. Methods may include FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM/microscopy, thermal analysis, rheology, and mechanical testing. Photos/videos of development work can be shared when appropriate. PRODUCT, MATERIAL & MANUFACTURING WORK — Product formulation, formulation chemistry, development, reformulation & reverse engineering — Polymer engineering, polymer science, materials engineering & chemical analysis — Material selection, recommendation, substitution & qualification — Thermoplastics, thermosets, engineering plastics, polymer blends & masterbatches — Silicone / PDMS, RTV silicone systems, silicone elastomers & rubber compounds — Adhesives / adhesive formulation, coatings, sealants, epoxies, polyurethanes & industrial formulations — Composites, nanocomposites, bio-based & biodegradable materials — Resins, fibers, fillers, pigments, dyes, plasticizers, stabilizers, compatibilizers, crosslinkers, processing aids & functional additives — Materials characterization, product testing, competitor benchmarking & comparative analysis — Failure analysis, root-cause analysis, fatigue, creep, durability, warpage, shrinkage & residual stress — Injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, compression molding, compounding & pellet production — Polymer processing, process troubleshooting, process design, DFM/manufacturability, prototyping, validation & scale-up — Raw-material identification, technical sourcing, supplier evaluation & qualification — Manufacturing & process optimization, cost reduction, process simulation & technical documentation SPECIALTY FORMULATIONS My formulation work also includes detergents, household/toilet cleaners, automotive cleaning/detailing products, degreasers, odor and stain removers, and feminine hygiene / absorbent products. Relevant work includes surfactants, solvents, builders, chelating agents, preservatives, fragrances, pH control, viscosity/rheology, stability, compatibility, superabsorbent materials, nonwovens, performance testing, ingredient sourcing, and manufacturing guidance. SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT & ENVIRONMENTAL SUPPORT My environmental science background adds green chemistry, safer ingredient selection, recycled and bio-based materials, biodegradability, environmental impact/fate, aquatic impact, VOCs, microplastics, waste reduction, resource efficiency, recyclability, end-of-life, water/wastewater considerations, and life-cycle thinking. I also support regulatory and environmental-compliance research, chemical-safety screening, and documentation involving EPA Safer Choice, TSCA, ECHA REACH/CLP, EU Detergents Regulation, SDS/GHS, and FDA/MoCRA where applicable. It still has to perform and make commercial sense. RESEARCH, REVIEW & TECHNICAL WRITING I am first author on two peer-reviewed papers and support scientific literature review, research/manuscript review, peer review, technical/report writing, experimental planning, data interpretation, laboratory reports, materials/environmental assessments, and technical documentation.
