A Lifelong Reader Who Loves Working With Writers I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, regularly finishing more than 100 books a year even while working full time. I've also always been fascinated by the people behind the books. My Bookstagram community of more than 1,300 followers includes authors, audiobook narrators, and book bloggers, keeping me connected to the people who write, perform, and discuss the stories we love. That lifelong interest has found a natural home in beta reading and manuscript evaluation. I enjoy discovering what an author is trying to accomplish, identifying what works, and offering constructive feedback where the manuscript could be stronger. Whether I'm evaluating fiction or nonfiction, my goal is to help the writer tell *their* story more effectively—not turn it into something I would have written myself. My editorial work includes: - Beta reading and manuscript evaluation: Plot, pacing, characterization, continuity, reader engagement, organization, and overall effectiveness. - Proofreading and editing: Grammar, punctuation, clarity, consistency, readability, and preservation of the author's voice. - Audiobook quality assurance: Prooflistening, identifying narration or production errors, and checking spoken text against manuscripts. - Nonfiction manuscript review: Assessing structure, argument, audience expectations, factual accuracy, and practical usefulness. Research, History, and Writing I've been researching family history and genealogy since 1982, building a family tree of more than 8,000 individuals and developing extensive experience with historical records, archives, and documentary sources. My interests extend well beyond genealogy. I'm particularly drawn to social history, the experiences of ordinary people, and the ways historical circumstances shape individual lives. My writing includes researched articles, historical narratives, and creative nonfiction, often exploring the connections between individual experiences and broader historical events. I'm also pursuing a degree in History, continuing an education that has taken a few interesting detours over the years. My experience includes organizational leadership, program development, staff supervision and training, grant-related reporting, compliance, policy development, and the creation of practical systems for managing information and operations. I've written training materials, developed procedures, organized large projects, evaluated programs, and worked with people from widely different backgrounds. That experience still serves me well. It has taught me to ask good questions, recognize problems, communicate clearly, manage competing priorities, and find workable solutions. I also bring experience with AI content evaluation, annotation, and editorial review, including assessing AI-assisted writing for accuracy, repetition, consistency, and readability. What It's Like to Work With Me I'm an independent freelancer who values clear communication, dependable work, and honest feedback. I don't believe every manuscript needs to become a literary masterpiece, every article needs to sound academic, or every project needs to be more complicated than the client intended. Good work begins with understanding the audience, the purpose, and the result you're trying to achieve. My approach is collaborative, practical, and attentive to detail. After a long and varied career, freelancing has given me the opportunity to put old skills to new uses, explore interests I've carried for decades, and occasionally discover abilities I didn't know I had.
