IoT & Embedded Product Engineer Industrial Consumer Medical ESP3
I build connected hardware products end-to-end — PCB through cloud through mobile app. Clients hire me when they've realized the hard part of a hardware product isn't any single layer — it's the integration. The firmware that talks to the sensor that talks to the cloud that trains the model that deploys back to the device that pushes to the mobile app. I've personally built and shipped every one of those layers, which means I debug at the seams where specialists get stuck. I do my best work in three domains: - Industrial and commercial IoT — factory automation, predictive maintenance, quality control, sensor networks, robotics, and high-reliability data acquisition. - Consumer products — smart home systems, connected gadgets, wearables, and companion mobile apps. Consumer hardware lives or dies on polish: enclosure fit, app UX, time-to-pairing. I design with that in mind from day one. - Medical devices — sensor-based monitoring, data acquisition, and connected health hardware. I build to documentation and traceability standards that support regulatory pathways, working alongside your QA/RA lead on the formal side. My stack covers the full product: - Electronics — custom PCB design in KiCad, in-house pick-and-place and debug bench, deep ESP32 experience across the peripheral stack (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, RMT, ADC, PWM, touch, camera) plus BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and cellular. - Mechanical — enclosures, mounts, and structural parts in FreeCAD, with in-house FDM and SLA 3D printing and laser cutting for rapid iteration. - Firmware — embedded C/C++ and ESP-IDF, real-time control, sensor fusion, OTA updates, robust field deployment. - Cloud on AWS — IoT Core, device fleets and provisioning, data pipelines, serverless backends, secure MQTT, time-series storage. - Machine learning — predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, computer vision for quality control and health monitoring. Training pipelines plus optimized deployment to edge or cloud. - Mobile apps — companion apps for device control, commissioning, monitoring, and end-user experience. - CI/CD and Linux infrastructure — full deployment stacks for firmware, cloud, and ML. What ships is what was tested. I default to KiCad, FreeCAD, Linux, and open standards. You own your files and can work with any vendor, any shop, any future engineer. No one holds your design hostage behind a license renewal. For industrial and medical products maintained for a decade or more, this isn't aesthetic — it's risk management. I'm a good fit if: - You need one person who can own the whole system - You have a stalled prototype with problems at the integration seams - You value traceable, vendor-independent deliverables I'm not the right fit if: - You need pure-software work with no hardware - You require a proprietary tool chain like Altium or SolidWorks as a hard constraint - You're shopping on price — I'm priced for full-stack ownership Send a short brief of what you're building and I'll tell you within a day whether it's a fit and roughly what the scope looks like.
