Most of my work is book-length: memoirs, novels, and nonfiction for a general reader. On Upwork over the last three years that has included Belonging (a 50,000-word spiritual memoir), Shadow Becoming (a lyric memoir), Fatherhood Revolution, With Love, Juniper (a first novel with a very particular voice), My Broken Compass (final proofread before publication), How to Get Fired (a career and workplace book), and a 100,000-word licensing textbook series, among others. Several of those authors came back for the next book. What people hire me for is the thing a cheaper edit rarely delivers: the manuscript ends up reading like you on a good day, not like an editor. I line edit and copyedit by hand in Word with tracked changes and margin comments, keep a style sheet, and query anything I'm unsure of instead of quietly changing it. When a book needs more than sentence work, I'll say so and tell you what I'd do about structure, pacing and chapter order, in an editorial letter you can act on. I also take fact-checking and citation work for research-based nonfiction (I work in a psychology research lab at Boston University), interior formatting for print and KDP, proofreading, and admissions essays. And I like the odd jobs: conversation card decks and trivia decks, the rulebook for a board game, children's picture books, a company's impact report, a year editing a village magazine in England, the occasional writing job (short stories, scripts, trivia questions), and right now a retirement keepsake book for a judge. Every job is one flat price for the whole manuscript, quoted after I've seen a sample, so there's no clock running. A full-length book usually takes three to four weeks.
