John Scott B.
Span the gap btwn mech eng & industrial design. SolidWorks expert
Scott Billings has 20 years of experience in product development, machine design, automation, and fabrication innovation. His skillset uniquely spans the gap between mechanical engineering and industrial design. Scott’s capacity to design aesthetics concurrently with functional design streamlines the DFM process, acting either as sole engineer-designer or as the leader of a team engineers and designers. He excels at top-level development of novel technologies and products, often resulting valuable intellectual property for clients (see patents section on page 4 of CV) . Scott has been involved in all phases of the development process including product definition, proof-of-concept, prototyping, CAD design, detailing, tooling, and full manufacturing production setup, both locally and off-shore. His experience has covered a broad range of industries and markets: military exoskeletons, medical rehab devices, automated pneumatic/hydraulic systems, furniture weldment systems, electrical lighting switches, car body-kits, emergency kits, and a sportsman pontoon-boat shaped like a frog. Scott has the highest level of parametric 3D CAD capabilities, including advanced surfacing, process driven geometry, management of large assemblies with PDM systems, and concise technical drawings with clear GD&T communication. More specifically, Scott knows SolidWorks inside-and-out. He has used SolidWorks for over 20 years and owns a SW Pro license. Knowledge of the software at Scott’s level means that he spends time designing, rather than spending lost time working through nuanced software roadblocks. Scott is a 3D Printing expert. He uses state-of-the-art additive manufacturing technologies and materials throughout his development process, often designing innovative geometries specific to these novel fabrication methods (i.e. metamaterials). He owns a number of 3D printers, both FDM-filament-based and LCD-resin-based (see Studio Equipment section in CV) . Scott thrives on design challenges that require research into existing patents followed by experimentation with novel technologies and custom-built proof-of-concept prototypes. Scott is the lead inventor on several patents including a four-bar linkage that matches the complicated biomechanics of the human knee (see Patents section). Scott also has extensive experience in database development and programming which he often integrates into his design process, such as VBA macros to automate SolidWorks and Excel together. Scott has a passion for sketching out concepts with graphite and sculpting up forms with clay. His subsequent degrees in the visual arts provide a unique skillset synergy of visual creativity and rational ingenuity. His artwork can be viewed at scottbillings.com. Scott also teaches at the University of British Columbia and Emily Carr University of Art and Design as a sessional instructor (part-time) in the fields of sculpture and digital media.
