Copyediting, Line Editing, Developmental Editing

For 32 years, I worked in educational and academic publishing, first as a content editor for Harcourt Brace and Holt, Rinehart and Winston and then as Vice President and Director of Humanities for McGraw-Hill Education. In that role, I oversaw publication of all humanities projects and ensured that MHE rose to become the leading humanities publisher. • In 2014, I left MHE to return to my first love--hands-on editing. • I have worked for a variety of clients, including MHE, Contentra Technologies, The Today Foundation, and MDPI, an open-access publisher of international academic, scientific, and professional journals. • I am equally comfortable with developmental editing, line editing, and copy editing and have a great love of and respect for the English language. • I hold a B.A., cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Washington and Lee University, with a double major in history and communications and an M.S. in Education, summa cum laude, with an emphasis on instructional design, from Northern Illinois University. • Having so much editorial experience, I am naturally experienced with CMS, ACS, MLA, AMA, and APA styles. While I do not have the latest iteration of each memorized, I know where to look to find the answers quickly. • I have worked in a variety of CMSs, including Habitat, InCopy, InDesign, and LaTex. • I believe that active communication is key when undertaking a project. Keeping all stakeholders informed effectively deals with small issues before they become major ones and streamlines product development.
