Joachim I.
Film Editor | Documentary & Narrative | Final Cut Pro
I’m a film editor and documentary filmmaker based in Austria. I’m most interested in projects where editing is part of the filmmaking, not just the final technical step. I like working with material that has something to discover in it. Sometimes that means building a documentary almost entirely through images, sound and observation. Sometimes it means finding the right timing and shape for a fiction scene. I care about what a cut changes, what can stay unspoken, and how a film holds together as a whole. Documentary is an important part of my background, and I have also directed several of my own documentary films. Because of that, I approach editing not only from a post-production perspective, but with an understanding of directing, cinematography and how material is created in the first place. Some of my documentary work is largely built through images, scenes, atmosphere, sound and observation. For me, editing is often about finding the right relationship between those elements. I have edited long-form documentaries, short documentaries, fiction films, corporate films and other story-driven projects. My documentary Fleischwochen, which I directed and edited, won the Local Artist Award at Crossing Europe Film Festival and received an Honorable Mention at Duisburger Filmwoche. My work has also screened at festivals including Diagonale, Crossing Europe, Dokumentarfilmwoche Hamburg and Ars Electronica. I mainly and preferably work in Final Cut Pro, and I also use DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro depending on the project. My work includes: Documentary editing Fiction and narrative film editing Long-form video editing Story structure and scene development Visual storytelling Sound editing and sound design Color correction and finishing Final Cut Pro workflows From 2019 to 2022, I also worked as a video editing tutor at the University of Art and Design Linz. I have served on film juries for Crossing Europe, YOUKI Film Festival and Cinema Next. I’m best suited to projects where the editor is expected to think about the film, not simply process footage.
