Conversion Tracking & Attribution | GA4, GTM, Server-Side, Meta CAPI
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 I trace the full customer journey - ad click → website → conversion → CRM → revenue → ad platform - to find exactly where tracking or attribution breaks. 𝗚𝗔𝟰 • 𝗚𝗧𝗠 • 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 • 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗜 • 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘀 • 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 • 𝗖𝗥𝗠 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 When reported conversions do not match real revenue, it is usually one of four things: browser and server firing the same event without a shared ID, a click ID being lost between the ad and checkout, a duplicate tag nobody remembers adding, or closed deals sitting in a CRM that never reach the ad platform. I find which one it is, then rebuild the tracking so the signal holds. I have found a conversion tag duplicated for 17 months and Google Ads tracking broken for 40-70 days on live accounts, both while the setup looked fine in preview mode. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝘁 → Browser and server events use shared event IDs so platforms deduplicate instead of double-counting → GCLID and FBCLID are stored as first-party data so attribution survives ad blockers, ITP and short cookie windows → CRM stage changes such as booked, showed, closed and sold are pushed to Meta CAPI and Google Ads as real conversions with deal value → Enhanced Conversions and Consent Mode v2 are implemented properly, with PII stripped from GA4 and bots filtered at the server 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗜 𝗙𝗶𝘅 → 𝗔𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 Usually due to deduplication, attribution windows, or a click ID lost before checkout. I trace the full path and identify the exact break. → 𝗚𝗔𝟰 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗨𝗻𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 I check referral exclusions, UTMs, redirects, and duplicate tags to find where attribution is being lost. → 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮 I build offline conversion flows from GoHighLevel, HubSpot or Salesforce so ad platforms can optimize on qualified revenue instead of just form fills. → 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗘𝗠𝗤 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟳 I check FBCLID persistence, match parameters and deduplication until the event quality is reliable. → 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 I check what Google Ads and Meta actually received, not just whether the tags appear to be firing. 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝟭) 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 - 𝟰𝟭.𝟵% 𝗨𝗻𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 Found a Google Ads conversion tag duplicated for 17 months, inflating reported conversions 3.3x to 5.4x monthly, plus a missing checkout domain in Conversion Linker. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁: Unassigned traffic dropped to under 16% in the first week. 𝟮) 𝗨𝗦 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗻 - 𝟰𝟬-𝟳𝟬 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Rebuilt GTM-direct firing, Meta CAPI through Stape, and browser/server deduplication across multi-city landing pages. 𝟯) 𝗨𝗦 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 - 𝗖𝗥𝗠 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Built a Book-A-Call tracking flow where CRM stages such as Showed, No-Show, and Sold are sent as conversion signals with deal value. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁: Meta can optimize against closed revenue instead of only form submissions. 𝟰) 𝗔𝗨 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 - 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Implemented server-side GTM + Meta CAPI on Stape with browser/server deduplication. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁: 𝟴.𝟮/𝟭𝟬 𝗘𝗠𝗤 and +𝟰𝟮.𝟵% 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 surfaced than native tracking. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 * Attribution: GCLID/FBCLID persistence, UTM attribution, cross-domain tracking, deduplication, offline conversions, CRM attribution * Server-side: GTM server containers, Stape, custom clients and transformations, first-party cookies, bot filtering * Tracking: GTM, GA4, Meta Pixel, Meta CAPI, Google Ads Conversion Tracking, Enhanced Conversions, Consent Mode v2, dataLayer architecture * Reporting: Looker Studio, GA4 Explorations, BigQuery * Platforms: Shopify, Shopify Plus, WooCommerce, WordPress, NextJS, GoHighLevel 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Configuration is only part of the job. Many tracking failures are code problems - a checkout stripping UTM parameters, a webhook firing before a CRM record updates, or a dataLayer event running at the wrong point in the page lifecycle. Those require JavaScript debugging and understanding how the website, browser, server, CRM and ad platforms exchange data. If your reported conversions do not match your revenue, or you are not sure whether they do, I can audit the setup, identify what is broken and define exactly what needs to be fixed.
