Jose P.

Audio/Music App and VST Plugin Developer

As you can see in my profile, I'm a multidisciplinary person. I've been involved in programming, electronics, landscape photography, and music composition using virtual instruments for about three decades. I have worked with many types of software, including photography processing, image editing, video editing, vector graphics, 3D modeling, audio processing, and music composition. In the 90’s I was looking up MIDI tables and using Music Trackers! I’ve been programming for over 30 years in freelance and corporate environments, mainly web related. Last year, I decided to add audio programming to my career to combine two passions: music and programming. I had worked with C++ on and off for some projects, so I started my self-education by updating myself on C++ and doing an own project on a full audio synthesizer plugin using the JUCE framework. I documented it all in an article series on Medium, where readers can check my approach and methodology. On this audio plugin project “Morpheus-Z”, I can see my decades of experience paying off. I have no trouble understanding stuff and easily find and solve problems, even hardcore C++ ones. Meanwhile, I've evolved a bit from this, and I've already completed a project building a JUCE audio effects plugin for simulating three vintage amps using neural networks. I was the sole developer, doing neural training, DSP, UI implementation, Moonbase integration, code signing, notarizing and installers for Windows and macOS. This project has continued to a second plugin with three more amps. You can check feedback for the prototype of this project on my UpWork profile. I've finished a project of four JUCE audio effects plugins for another client. These include several DSP effects, including dynamic de-essing. It also includes spectrum and EQ curve visualizations. Please see the portfolio below. I like to get different things working together, like programming software for using a tablet for live looping or controlling a virtual instrument's expression, both connected to Bitwig DAW, or using custom electronics in LEGO displays. When using generative AI while programming, I’m very critical of how it fits the overall project and code quality goals. I use LLMs to analyze options, learn about specific patterns, summarize knowledge, and code refactoring. Generally, I like to strive for a high code quality level that caters to readability and maintenance, according to the available budget. I would not like to compromise too much and deliver code with bad programming practices: I like to be proud of my work.
