Building software is straightforward when requirements are clean, the system is new, and nothing has gone sideways yet. The harder work takes a different kind of experience: legacy code that has to stay alive while it's modernized, deployments that need to land without drama, architectures that have to grow without breaking. Over eighteen years of that kind of experience is what I bring. I've worked as a developer, architect, systems engineer, project manager, CTO, and security officer, often simultaneously, serving a few hundred clients across many industries. I was personally responsible for 150+ production databases, 200+ servers, and the live systems of more than 80 clients, including COVID processing labs running thousands of samples a day. I built monitoring solutions, trained the team, designed and managed the security program, and was still writing code every day. That's the difference between someone who knows a technology and someone who's built with it under pressure. The technical range is intentionally broad: full-stack development in Node.js, TypeScript, C#/.NET, PHP, and React; database architecture and optimization across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Oracle; REST, GraphQL, SOAP, and HL7 APIs; CI/CD pipelines; Docker, Kubernetes, and Traefik; AWS infrastructure — including datacenter-to-cloud migrations and years of cost management. Automations and web applications I built a decade ago are still running in production. Technical skill is table stakes. What I've seen matter just as much is communication. I've worked remotely for over fifteen years, and the lesson I keep coming back to is that there's no such thing as too much clarity. I'm equally comfortable explaining architecture to a non-technical stakeholder, writing documentation the team will actually use, or working through requirements with a client who's still figuring out what they need. One background note worth mentioning: I came to software through a career in analytical chemistry, and a significant portion of my software work has been in laboratory systems — LIMS, lab automation, instrument integration, and healthcare data.
