Developmental Editor for Nonfiction Business Books First Time Authors
Your nonfiction draft is finished and it still does not read like a book. I do developmental editing for nonfiction authors, with a focus on books that started life as something else: podcast episodes, interview transcripts, coaching notes, or an AI-generated first draft. That kind of manuscript has a specific set of problems. Chapters repeat the same point in different words. The argument does not build, so a reader who opens at chapter four has no idea why they are there. The voice is right in some places and flat in others. The material is good. The book is not there yet. My job is to find the book inside the draft and show you how to build it. I work in Microsoft Word with Track Changes and Google Docs, and I deliver work that is ready for the next stage, whether that is a copy editor, a formatter, or KDP. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS My book came out of an AI tool or a transcript. Can you actually fix that? Yes. This is most of my work. I recently turned a manuscript generated from a client's podcast episodes into a finished nonfiction book, and the client rated it 5.0. Transcript-based drafts are repetitive and out of order, but the raw thinking is usually strong, which is why they are worth editing rather than rewriting. What is the difference between developmental editing and proofreading? Developmental editing works on structure, argument, chapter order, pacing and clarity. Proofreading works on spelling, punctuation and typos. Developmental editing comes first, because there is no point proofreading a chapter you are going to delete. What do I actually receive? An editorial letter explaining what is working and what is not, an in-manuscript pass in Word Track Changes with comments and suggested changes, and a revised chapter outline if the structure needs to move. You accept or reject every change yourself. How long does it take? 7 to 10 days for a manuscript up to 50,000 words. Will you rewrite my book in your voice? No. I edit toward your voice, not away from it. If a section needs new writing, I flag it and tell you what it has to do, and you write it. Do you handle fiction? No. Nonfiction only. WHO I WORK BEST WITH Podcasters, coaches and consultants turning existing content into a first book Self-published nonfiction authors publishing to Amazon KDP Memoir, self-help, business and personal development authors First-time authors who want the reasoning explained, not just tracked changes Authors who would rather hear an honest structural problem early than a polite one late WHAT I DO NOT DO I do not edit fiction, novels or short stories. I do not ghostwrite books from scratch. I do not do cover design, formatting or publishing setup. I do not do academic theses or dissertations. Sending your manuscript to a generalist who does all of the above is how books come back polished and still unreadable. READY WHEN YOU ARE I am online most days and reply within one hour. Send me a message with your genre, your word count, and where the draft came from, and I will tell you honestly whether developmental editing is what your manuscript needs. If it is not, I will say so. A free 15-30 minute call is available if you would rather talk it through.
