Firmware/Software Engineer

As a highly-motivated and skilled Software and Firmware Engineer, self-starter, goal-oriented team player, independent learner and able communicator, with enthusiasm for complex problem solving and algorithm development, and a proven record of accomplishments, I take pride in providing high-quality firmware and software solutions, using object-oriented, modular design, and Design-by-Contract, and Test-Driven Development to achieve a high level of reliability with very maintainable source code. AREAS OF EXPERTISE C, C#/VB.NET, software reliability and speed, Windows desktop applications, several database engines, expert in SQL, SQLite, several scripting languages (Python, Perl, Awk, Sed, bash, ksh, sh), several data formats (XML/HTML+CSS/YAML/JSON/EDI/CSV/Bar-Delimited), with specialties in 2D/3D spatial mathematics and text parsing, including compiler front-end design (Flex/Lex/Bison/ Yacc/ANTLR), Agile Methodologies, documentation and technical writing, and Doxygen, Sphinx + Jinja + Breathe documentation builders. Firmware Specific: C, RTOS (esp. FreeRTOS), device drivers, rendering drivers, 13 years experience architecting highly-reliable GPS-based multi-threaded automotive firmware applications and deployment (in data-logging, lap timing, lap-time prediction, color-touch-screen dashboards other automotive devices) where speed and high reliability are mandatory qualities. This included in-depth working with multimeter, oscilloscope, schematics, PCB modification, the gamut of low-level Real-Time Operating System facilities (semaphores, queues, MUTEXes, etc.), writing several dozen high-speed drivers, PIC microcontrollers (PIC32 [MX and MZ], PIC24, dsPIC33), using C, Harvard and MIPS32 Assembly languages, and 6 months experience with Arm-Cortex A8. Expert with FreeRTOS, GPS, CAN and LIN networking, DMA, UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, LIN, ADC, USB, SD, EEPROM, PMP, OBD-II and LVGL graphics library (v6-v9), and several DSP techniques, including Kalman Filters and PID controllers. Expert with Git version control, GitFlow Branching Model and GitHub CI/CD. EXPERIENCE WGA Crystal Research, Inc. Denver, CO Sr. Architect and Lead Developer. April 2007 – Current - Designed and developed from scratch firmware for most of HM Quickshifter UK, Ltd’s devices, including: - 4 motorcycle-racing, data-logging, lap-timing dashboards, with reliable field-update-able firmware, which used PIC24, dsPIC33, and the last 2 used PIC32MZ microcontrollers with FreeRTOS and USB storage. 2 used LVGL for their complex-yet-intuitive color touch-screen user interfaces. All 4 used PWM-controlled LED back-lighting. Displays: 256x128 1-bpp LCD, 128x64 1-bpp LCD, 480x320 16-bpp color touch-screen, and 800x480 32-bpp color touch-screen respectively. All 4 used an O-O oriented, Design-by-Contract design approach for high reliability. (See accomplishments for 3 patent-able features of these dashboards.) - 1 advanced data-logging Quickshifter and RPM/Limiter adopted and in current use by FIA and Moto-America Racing Series. It uses a PIC32MX microcontroller, FreeRTOS, and 11 threads. This Quickshifter is in current use in the field. - 5 different models of motorcycle-racing Quickshifters (2 had small, 1-line LCD displays for user configuration), using various PIC microcontrollers that are in current use in the field. - Developed custom Windows applications for several of the Quickshifters and dashboards for user configuration, recording of data logs (containing data-log history for the whole race, including throttle position, braking, suspension performance, and a host of other data), and firmware updates. - Languages: C/Embedded, VB.NET, C#, Perl. Platforms: PIC24, dsPIC33, PIC32MX, PIC32MZ, ARM-Cortex A8, Windows. - Redesigned and re-documented a large portion of LVGL’s version 9.x documentation to make it easier to learn. I also re-wrote its documentation-build system to make it more maintainable. (LVGL is a firmware graphics/UI library.) PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Fowler Software Design LLC Denver, CO Project Leader - Architected and led development for a wide variety of custom solutions resulting in increased customer efficiency and profitability. These included everything from custom reporting for a small cell-phone company, to whole-company production-line solutions. - Holistic design integrated a melding of new and existing solutions including database-centric applications, data warehousing, specialized utility applications, and software libraries. - Worked individually, as part of a team, and served as Project Leader on 27 successful projects. - Led company’s transition to Agile development methodologies (modified version of eXtreme customized to our team’s needs). - Languages: Visual FoxPro, Eiffel, SQL, C/C++, C#, COBOL. Platforms: Win32, VMS, OpenGL.
