Information Design & Data Visualisation | PhD, PMP
I structure complex information so it can be understood, used, and acted on. This typically involves high-stakes presentations, data-heavy reports, or communication systems that need to scale — where clarity directly affects understanding and decision-making. Alongside a part-time design leadership role, I take on a small number of external projects where structure, clarity, and visual thinking are critical. Most of my work begins where content is already complex — but not yet clearly organised. That’s often where communication breaks down: in reports that are difficult to navigate, presentations that don’t land, or data that is technically correct but hard to interpret. My background is in information design (The Guardian, Kantar), combined with product and delivery experience. I work across the full lifecycle — from early framing through to production-ready outputs and systems that teams can continue using independently. --- What I do This shows up in three types of work: - Strategic presentations — investor decks, internal strategy, technical narratives - Data visualisation and infographics — reports, editorial, dashboards, storytelling systems - Communication systems — templates, guidelines, and repeatable visual frameworks --- How I approach projects Design is not a final layer — it’s a way of structuring thinking. The work starts with clarity: - what needs to be communicated - how the information is organised - where complexity needs to be reduced From there, I develop visual systems that make the material clear, consistent, and scalable. Where needed, I introduce structure — timelines, hierarchies, or delivery frameworks — so the design reflects the logic of the content, not just its appearance. --- Clients and recognition I’ve worked with organisations including The Guardian, The New York Times, Google, Deloitte, OECD, IBM, and the United Nations — typically on work where clarity, scale, and stakeholder alignment are critical. - Information is Beautiful Award (Silver) - Macmillan Prize for Illustration (Highly Commended) - Work published in The Guardian, Fast Company, and The Atlas of Infographics (Taschen) --- Working together I work on projects where: - complexity makes communication difficult - clarity affects decisions, not just presentation - the output needs to scale beyond a single deliverable If you’re working on something along those lines, feel free to reach out with a bit of context — I’m happy to take a look and see if it’s a good fit. --- Selected testimonials “Zhenia is a phenomenal designer who consistently over-delivered on expectations. His portfolio is very impressive and I would recommend his expertise without hesitation.” — Sean McClure, Brand Strategy Executive “Zhenia is a very talented designer and a delight to work with. He produced excellent data visualisation work for a particularly demanding client, remaining positive and professional throughout.” — Lisa Grundberg, Senior Editor, The Guardian “I had the pleasure of working with Zhenia on a number of projects. Not only is he a highly talented designer and illustrator, but also one of the most level-headed and collaborative colleagues I’ve worked with.” — Mark McClure, Founder, Mark McClure Studio
