Brand Strategist | Find Out Why Your Company Exists, in One Hour
Nobody has ever asked you why. Investors ask what you sell. Customers ask what it costs. Your designer asks what colors you like. The one question that would make every other answer easier goes unasked, because it feels too big to say out loud in a meeting. So you build without it. The website gets written by whoever is holding the keyboard. The pitch changes depending on who's in the room. You hire a marketer, they ask for a brand brief, and you send a logo and a paragraph you wrote at one in the morning. Every tactic you buy is a guess about a strategy nobody wrote down, and guesses compound. Six months in, the company has three personalities and you're the only one who can tell which is real. I spend an hour with you and find it. One session, on video, just the two of us. I ask the questions the rest of your business keeps skipping, and I keep asking until we hit the thing you believe. It runs a little like therapy, except you leave with a sentence you can put on a wall. That sentence is your Why. I write it up and send it to you, and from then on your website, your deck, your hiring, and your next ad all have something to be built from. It's $50, and here's why. The Why is the foundation. I make my living building what goes on top of it. If you want the whole brand built on that sentence, we'll talk about it after. If you don't, you still have the sentence, and you'll notice everything gets easier. WHAT GOES ON TOP OF IT I call it a Minimum Viable Brand: the smallest complete brand strategy a company can go to market with. Brand positioning a buyer can repeat to someone else. A target audience described the way you'd describe a friend. A value proposition in one sentence. Brand personality and brand voice, so the copy sounds like one company on every channel. A primary brand archetype, so the brand story has a shape. Mission and vision that mean something because they came from the Why instead of a template. Visual identity direction a designer can start from without a second meeting. All of it on a one-page brand house you can hand to a freelancer, a new hire, or an AI and get your company back instead of a guess. Brand strategy without a Why is a mood board with a budget. That's the order I work in, and it's why the hour comes first. WHO BOOKS THE HOUR Founders find me when they're launching a startup and want the brand foundation right before the website gets built. When they have a name and a logo and no idea what to say. When the pitch deck describes a different company than the product does. When they're rebranding after a pivot and the old story stopped being true. When a marketer or an agency asked for brand guidelines and there aren't any. When they're raising and the investor story doesn't hold together past slide three. When every employee describes the company differently and nobody's wrong. Those are all the same problem wearing different clothes, and it's the problem the hour solves. SEVEN KINDS OF FOUNDER I've spent enough years with founders to know there are seven kinds. The Prophet, the Builder, the Hustler, the Operator, the Expert, the Repeater, and the Accidental. Each one builds a company for a different reason, and each one has a specific way of running it into the ground. I wrote a series about it, then built a quiz called Founder Types so I could diagnose people before we ever spoke. Ten scenarios, and it tells you which one you are. I built it because the type is the pattern, and the pattern is never the whole story. A Hustler and an Expert can sell the identical product and need opposite brands, because they started for opposite reasons. The quiz finds the pattern. The hour finds the reason. I've been a brand strategist and creative director for thirty years, for a startup that was still in an incubator and for the Coke Zero launch, and the questions were the same both times. What are you for. Who is it for. Why did you, of all people, build it. Book the hour. Nothing to prepare.
