Hello there! Jon Kay, cartoonist-at-large, here - I have considerable experience in a wide range of design, illustration and cartooning, story telling and animation techniques; both as a freelancer and as a student of Yoobee School of Design in Auckland, New Zealand. At Yoobee, I have gained qualifications in both graphic design and film making; so I know my way around following client briefs, page design and layouts, pre-press, research and idea development; as well as developing a firm grasp on the importance of planning, attention to detail - and, in many cases, not backing down until a particularly frustrating design challenge has been overcome! In my time in Yoobee’s film-making courses, I have created stories and scripts(both serious and comedic), storyboards and concept designs for short films, music videos, animated TV intros and motion graphics assignments (both my own and working in a group); as well as developing both hand-drawn and vector art assets (characters, props, backgrounds and title screens) for several short animated films, and bringing them to animated life using Adobe AfterEffects and the brilliant little plug-in DUiK. My freelancing work and personal projects also rely heavily on my illustration and writing skills: among other things, I have created parody advertisements, comics and character art for the Fight Squad project; multiple comic strips and comic book stories for my pop-culture-savvy series Cosmos; gig posters for the Auckland-based ‘ukulele collective’ Four Dollars Thirty; and am one chapter away from completing my sci-fi / adventure / humour-drama novel Island of the Bargain-basement Dinosaurs! How’s that for diversity? I love coming up with and developing ideas, and finding creative ways to make a story, character or situation that little bit different - anything that fires my imagination, I’m all over it.....
