Daniel S.
Clinical Psychologist
I am a Clinical Psychologist, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. In addition to being a writer, my professional interests as a therapist include long-term psychodynamically informed therapeutic models, as well as cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based interventions. I also have an interest in sex therapy for addressing male sexual dysfunction, neuropsychology and neuropsychoanalysis, enhancing work-place effectiveness, and enhancing personal well-being in the context of chronic illnesses, such as Diabetes. Training and Professional Experience: I completed my Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2014. During this time, I was trained in various modalities of psychotherapy as well as psychological assessment at the UCT Child Guidance Clinic. Furthermore, I completed my master's thesis, titled, Cultural Discourse Among South African Clinical Psychologists, and presented these findings at the European Congress of Psychology in Stockholm, 2013. In 2015 I worked at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. More specifically, I worked at the Male Admissions Unit (acute psychosis), as well as Alexandra Hospital (Inpatient Unit and Outpatient Service for adults with comorbid Intellectual Disability and Mental Illness), J2 Psychiatry Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital and Hanover Park Community Health Clinic. Under supervision of clinical psychologists and in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, I worked intersubjectively with clients suffering from psychiatric disorders using individual psychotherapy, psychoeducational groups and family interventions. I also completed psychometric and neuropsychological interventions, the latter of which involved case presentations to the Division of Neuropsychiatry at Groote Schuur Hospital. As a Community Service Clinical Psychologist (2016), I was employed by the Western Cape Department of Health. I worked at a district level general hospital: Khayelitsha District Hospital, where I engaged in psychological interventions with clients dealing with various psychiatric disorders and comorbid medical conditions. I also provided outreach therapy services at two community health clinics and worked closely with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, and family physicians. As of 2017, I have been registered as a clinician in private practice, providing services to clients face-to-face or over skype. I also currently work part time for the Western Cape Health Department as a locum therapist. Writing Experience: Practice aside, I am a passionate writer, having accumulated at least 6 years of experience as a features contributor and freelancer for several local publications. Topics which I enjoy writing about include psychology and psychopathology (predictably), health and wellness, lifestyle, spirituality, politics and satire. I am also passionate about designing and conducting research, having published two academic papers under the South African Journal of Psychology. I am an avid language editor and proof-reader, having worked part-time in this field for several years. Please note that my hourly rate quoted above relates to writing and consultancy based tasks, not psychotherapy. Feel free to contact me for my therapy rates.
