My background is 20 years of mechanical design in film and television special effects, which means bespoke fabricated equipment, tight deadlines, and drawings that have to work on the shop floor because there is no second chance on a film set. That experience includes a 1,000-tonne underwater rotating structure cited as the largest special effects rig ever built for a feature film. The work I do is mechanical design across the full range: concept development, detailed 3D modelling, structural and hydraulic analysis, fabrication drawings, and site commissioning. I work directly with fabricators and machinists, and I understand what it takes to turn a drawing into something that actually gets built and works first time. My primary tools are Onshape (Certified Professional) and SolidWorks, with AutoCAD for 2D work. For analysis I use Mathcad and SkyCiv. Hydraulic and pneumatic system design is a core part of my practice. My background covers fabricated steel structures and weldments, sheet metal, modular mechanical systems, motion rigs, dynamic and rotating machinery, hydraulic and pneumatic actuation, and design for manufacture across a wide range of production methods. I carry design authority on everything I deliver. I size and check my own work, document my calculations, and produce technical packages that fabricators and clients can actually use.
