Computer Networking and Security Expert

I'm a computer scientist with eclectic experience and interests in computer security, privacy, public policy, and computer networking. As the first-ever Staff Technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, I advised lawyers about how technology worked to help them with a wide variety of litigation, and researched and developed ideas and tools related to privacy and security. I was a co-founder of the Let's Encrypt certificate authority, the largest public certificate authority in the world, and have spoken about my work all over the world. I've been consulting independently on Internet standards, privacy, and security topics since 2020. I've enjoyed explaining the details of how technology works to lawyers, policymakers, journalists, and the general public, and I continue to pursue interests in theoretical computer science and mathematics. In the future, I hope to learn how current research in formal methods and programming language theory can be applied to help make systems and communications safer and more reliable. I'm enthusiastic about free and open source software and have primarily used Linux-based systems since the 1990s. I have generalist knowledge of many different layers of the software stack and like thinking about how they work together.
